I arrived at the pier in carrey-le-rouet at 8:00 am. after roughly an hour fitting and checking the gear we headed out on the boat for our first diving session. the rib was much bigger than I expected with a 300 horse power Yamaha engine at the rear. once we arrived in the bay Calanque du cap rousset a 15 minute boat journey. we were briefed on the plan for this morning which would involve a three hundred metre swim to and from the boat, followed by a one on one lesson with one of the three diving instructors. with them we would complete two exercises.
1. remove our regulator (tube that allows us to breathe under water) and put back into our mouth.
2. remove our mask, put it back on and clear any water inside it.
I found the first exercise easy but struggled with the second and took two attempts at completing it.
after everyone completed their exercises we headed back to the pier. all the gear had to be rinsed down to try and get rid of the salt water including the jackets that hold our bottles.
at one o'clock we headed back to the instructors house to complete the theory part of the diving course. we ate lunch till 2:30 because the French a long meal and everything seems much slower with them. after lunch we unclipped our jackets from the bottles and had to re-clip them to ensure we knew what to do in case of emergency.
at 4 o'clock we went into the classroom where we watched an hour long video on the first chapter of the diving manual.
in the manual we larned about the density of the water when we are diving how to inflate and deflate our BCD's and many more minor details.
